COMMUNITY / NEWS

We are extremely proud of three of our FSCU Directors who were presented with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medals on February 26th, 2013 for their many contributions to the community. Congratulations to Michael Neely, our Chair, Stephen Buckingham, our past Chair and Chair of our Governance Committee and Keith Hamilton. Congratulations gentlemen!

Giving and Reporting

When people ask us about the difference between banks and credit unions, our commitment to you and your community is where it becomes very clear. We create products, services and social good for fire services employees, their families and the causes they hold close. We are owned by our members—by you—and we are governed accordingly. Every member has a say in what we do and how we serve. That is the credit union way. So welcome to the section of our site that defines our structure and governance, our charity and our stories.

Refer us to family and colleagues please.

Who We Are

Fire Services Credit Union is a full-service credit union that is dedicated to the financial well being of fire services employees and their families. We are regulated by the province of Ontario, all deposits are insured (just like the banks) and we offer a full suite of products and services, in branch and online, by telephone and at ATMs across Canada. Just like the banks—only without all that institutional stuff.

Membership in the Fire Services Credit Union is open to both active and retired employees of fire departments in Ontario, as well as civic employees of the former borough of East York, and the extended family members of both these groups. Spouses, children, parents, and siblings can all take advantage of everything we have to offer!

Here's a quick history of your credit union:

It all began in 1941. With the world at war, the founding members of our Credit Union were intent on building a strong financial future for Fire Fighters and their families. Our first offices were located in fire halls, wherever there was available space. There were initially 21 members, and assets totalled $3,278.

The first mortgages were approved in 1948 and the terms were simple. The amount could not exceed $3,500, taking into consideration that department salaries that year started at $2,191 and climbed up to the $7,000 earned by the Chief.

In 1993 we purchased our Avenue Road site and our growth continued. Today we have about 4,500 members and assets totalling approximately $68,000,000.

The years from 2005 to 2010 brought a number of challenges, including changes to regulatory standards, an economic recession, increasing competition, and rapid technological advancements. In 2010 we changed our name to Fire Services Credit Union and adopted a new logo, reflecting our nature as a modern credit union embracing new ways of serving a new generation of Fire Services employees.

Much has changed since 1941, but our commitment remains the same: to build strong financial futures for our members.

The Toronto Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial

On Sunday June 3rd, the names of eight fallen fire fighters were added to the Memorial Honour Roll at Toronto's Harbourfront Fire Station 334, located at 339 Queen's Quay West. Numerous fire fighters, along with their friends and families, attended this service to pay their respects. Also in attendance was our CEO, Kevin J. Connolly, who held the honour of laying a wreath at the memorial grounds on behalf of Fire Services Credit Union (see the images below).

To further commemorate those who have fallen, the 2012 Memorial Ceremony will be held in Ottawa on September 7-9. For more information about this weekend and its scheduled events, please visit The Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation website at www.cfff.ca.

An ABC of the Battle of the Atlantic

We're the hosts to this amazing teaching resource detailing Canada's role in the Atlantic Theatre of Operations during World War II. FSCU sponsored the web adaptation of this outstanding secondary level (grades 9-12) teaching tool to ensure that today's young people will be aware of the incredible contribution and sacrifice made by the Canadian Navy during the Second World War.

For the Kids: KOSMIKS

Kosmiks is a website that teaches kids from six to ten about smart money management. Kosmiks introduces kids to the concepts of earning money through work and saving that money for larger purchases, as well as the ideas of interest and monthly payments. The basic message is: if you want to play, you have to work hard and manage your money wisely!

If you want your son or daughter to sign up for Kosmiks, they'll need a free Space Code (a 6-digit number) from the credit union. The free Space Code lets them create their secure account on the Kosmiks website so they can start earning and playing.

Membership Perks

We'll keep adding new ideas, benefits and special options just for members of Fire Services Credit Union and their families - just as fast as we can think them up. Here's a good idea to warm you up:

Ambassador Referral Bonus$$

It's called the Ambassador program. We give you CASH for every fire service employee or family member who joins Fire Services Credit Union based on your referral. Everyone gets easy access to outstanding FSCU personal banking services, plus a free copy of The Bucket Coach, our step-by-step money management and financial planning guide written specifically for you.

Everyone wins!

The referring member (Ambassador) will receive either* a $25.00 referral reward or a $50.00 referral reward for every new member who qualifies for membership. The new member can apply for an FSCU MasterCard and take advantage (on approved credit) of our low introductory rate of 3.99% for 10 months on balance transfers, plus receive 5000 Choice Rewards® Points for linking their MasterCard® to their Debit (ATM) card. A linked Debit card adds reward points to the MasterCard with every Point of Sale purchase!

* How it works:

A $25.00 referral reward is paid to the Ambassador when the new member has paid their member share and opened a savings account with scheduled ongoing biweekly deposits.
A $50.00 referral reward is paid to the Ambassador when the new Primary Member has paid their member share, opened a functioning chequing account, and elected to deposit their regular net pay into that chequing account using Direct Deposit. In the event a new member becomes a Primary Member then the initial referring member will receive the additional $25.00.

All referral fees will be paid after the first 90 days of an active membership account setup and any retroactive adjustment up to 6 months after the membership account was initially opened.

Contact Craig Wyldes at 416-397-4641 for more information about the FSCU Ambassador program.

NEWS

Chip Cards, Protecting You Against Fraud

As of December 31st, 2012 all FSCU Member Cards with magnetic strips have been deleted and replaced with chip card technology. This change is being implemented by INTERAC® to protect our members against debit card fraud. Although rare (occurring in less than 1% of transactions), debit card fraud is a reality that can be made less likely by the introduction of chip technology. Like having a computer on your debit card, chip technology increases your protection against fraud by providing an additional layer of security.

Visit your FSCU branch, email us at memberservices@firecreditunion.ca or call 416 440 1294 to get more information and begin using your new chip card before the Dec 31st expiry date.
